New Ability Revealed: Booby Trap

Learn how you can use Booby Traps in Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Multiplayer

Hello everyone,

Last week-end at PAX, we revealed a number of things about Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag Multiplayer. One of them was the new Booby Trap ability.

What is Booby Trap?

It’s a trap! To be clearer, it’s an ability that can be used on doors, lifts, platforms or corner helpers (as known as “chasebreakers” in the game). Booby traps take a few moments to arm (just like tripwire bombs) and will explode and kill your opponents (pursuers and targets) if they trigger them.

Though small and rather difficult to notice, Booby traps are visible to all players in the form of a small white box, with the trapper also having an icon on top of the booby trap they placed. When you’re about to use a chasebreaker, better check around if you see that small white box or a twitching Animus effect, both indicators that a booby trap has been placed there.

It's one of the rare lethal abilities and, as such, will bear an appropriate cooldown.

How to counter it?

Booby traps are only triggered when the chasebreakers are triggered. How do you trigger a chasebreaker? If you run. In other terms, if you notice a booby trap by a door and are careful to walk, you won’t trigger it. For lifts, corner helpers and platforms, you need to be free running to reach any of those, so careful with that.

So, check the chasebreakers before using them, walk instead of running, avoid them if you find out they’re trapped, use an Animus Shield, or even replace opponents’ Booby traps with your own! (However, note that you can only have one Booby Trap active at any given time.)

A word from the designers

“We loved the intention behind the Closure ability. It’s basically a call to play with chasebreakers. Closure relies on chasebreakers but it’s also very conditional and requires good timing to be efficient. This explains why Closure was not as popular as we expected it to be in Assassin’s Creed 3.

The idea with Booby trap was to create a good alternative to Closure. Booby traps are less conditional, less timed, easier to read and more efficient.

The conclusion was to base it on only one Chasebreaker, with only one possible state (trapped or not trapped), and to make it lethal.

We hope the ability will be handy and fun to play with. It should change the dynamic of the game slightly, making players a little more cautious with chasebreakers while bringing an interesting twist to team modes particularly.”

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag will be available in stores on October 29, 2013.
